Setting up an Internet Service Provider

The Internet Access FAQ

This is a must-read for anyone running their own ISP (or planning to set one up).

Advice for Beginning ISPs

"I have recently gotten a bunch of inquiries from budding ISPs that basically ask where to start, how to get a bit of a handle on all the baffling information and new terminology I have discussed in the FAQ. Thus, this document. It will help you determine whether being an ISP might be for you, and suggest a brief (one-month) and moderately priced ($ 0- $ 3,000) experiment you can embark on to see if you're ISP material."

Internet Online Pricer (most useful for US readers)

An automatic pricer that, given your area code, phone number, and the speed of your desired connection (average utilization; ranging from 64Kbps to 45Mbps), will mail you a detailed connection rate. Find out how much an MCI connection would cost without having to talk to a sales rep.

Still wondering how the pieces fit together? This shows you the relationships between your main server, your router, your CSU/DSU, your upstream provider, your terminal server, your news server...

Internet Service Provider Tools and Components

Apache Web Server

Apache is now the most popular web server in the world. The Apache project has been organized in an attempt to answer some of the concerns regarding active development of a public domain HTTP server for UNIX. The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server which provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards.

Cache Breaker Sites

Not strictly a tool, this is actually more of a resource. This is a list of sites that cause problems with web caches. "They are not easily accessed by users who rely on proxy cache software to overcome bandwidth limitations. This is either because their sites are not cacheable, or they do not give the cache enough information as when to expire their content. The latter leads to users complaining about "stale" pages and reloading them often."

Firewalls mailing list

"The Firewalls mailing list is for discussions of Internet firewall security systems and related issues. Relevant topics include the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and philosophy of Internet firewall security systems."

Radius Authentication Server

"Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service: Remote Network Access Security in an Open Systems Environment. RADIUS is a system of distributed security that secures remote access to networks and network services against unauthorized access."

Squid Proxy Cache

"Squid offers high performance proxy caching for web clients, supporting FTP, gopher, and http data objects. The cache software, available in binary and source, is more than an order of magnitude faster than the CERN cache and other popular Internet caches, because it never forks for WWW and gopher access, is implemented with non-blocking I/O, keeps meta data and especially hot objects cached in RAM, caches DNS lookups, supports non-blocking DNS lookups, and implements negative caching both of objects and of DNS lookups." - Squid FAQ. If you liked Harvest, try Squid!

Windows NT Web Server Tools

Databases, counters, guestbooks, mailers, CGI, search engines, chat, connectivity tools, finger servers, DNS servers, firewalls, proxy servers, ftp/gopher/http servers, log analysis, mail servers and gateways, news servers, NFS, Perl, telnet servers, X Window clients - a ton of Windows NT Web server tools and much, much more.
